Kylie Johnston (Dinn) Graduating Class of 2003
My name is Kylie Johnston (Dinn), I graduated from St Andrews Year 12 in 2003.
After initially working on jobsites, I started working with a photography company as a photographic retoucher/Mini Lab and production worker. I had met the owner at an Arts night at SALC, where my artwork caught their eye! I was also given the opportunity to create a CD cover illustration for Don Spencer Children's CD. In 2010, I began managing the production side. I was also commissioned to paint wall murals, water tanks, and store interiors. After getting married in 2011, I began work as a graphic designer, undertaking training in graphic design for print and promotional product artworks.
Eventually, I trained in accounts and then bought the business, iMint Print, at the end of 2016, whilst also starting Kylie's Kreations FB page. In addition to my full-time work, I also completed various wall murals and conducted "How to draw Manga" lessons in schools, including SALC.
Helen Brilliant, who had written her first children's book, Bluey the Fly, asked me to collaborate with her as an illustrator and graphic designer. In 2019, Helen and I launched a book publishing business called Seventeen17 Brilliant books. Our first book was called Stumpy the Water Dragon at The Green Frog Hollow, based on a real water dragon that lived at The Green Frog Hollow Cafe in Logan Village. My son, who was 3.5 years old, created the main character’s friend, Rainbow Gecko.
We have just released the second book from what will be a series of six. For this second book, I was the author and Helen was the editor. Our Stumpy the Water Dragon & Friends Rainbow Series focuses on themes around friendship, family, kindness, compassion and understanding others. Illustrating children's books has always been my dream job and to be starting this journey is very exciting! These books will be available in the Junior School Library in the coming months.
I am happily married with two beautiful little boys. In my spare time, I love photography, photo books and other creative projects.
