The Role

We are seeking a passionate Secondary School educator to teach Business and Entrepreneurship subjects, with the ability to teach Economics and Legal Studies desirable. The successful educator will create engaging learning experiences, foster meaningful relationships, and contribute actively to our Secondary School culture.

As Head of Enterprise Studies, encompassing Business, Economics, Legal Studies and our Entrepreneurship programs, you will have responsibility for curriculum and pedagogical leadership across these subjects for Years 7 - 12. This is a rare opportunity to lead a future‑focused, well‑supported portfolio within a collaborative and ambitious faculty. A significant part of this role is oversight of our Entrepreneurship pathways, including Innov8 (Year 8) and Imagine (Year 9) - whole‑cohort, core programs designed to develop students as confident changemakers.

Launched in 2024 and 2025 respectively, Innov8 and Imagine build on the College’s long‑running Innovate and Create Co-Curricular program and extend entrepreneurial thinking into innovation with empathy. Students progress from deep problem understanding to solution design, working with real‑world partners such as aged‑care, local businesses and environmental organisations, and showcasing their learning through Pitch and Trade Fair events. With strong support from College leadership and a dedicated team that embraces contemporary teaching and learning, this role will suit an innovative, strategic leader who can further develop bold ideas in our programs.

Key Responsibilities:

Permanent Teacher Role:

  • Teach Business (inc. Senior years) and other Enterprise subjects (e.g. Innov8 and Imagine)

  • Create engaging learning experiences that cater to diverse student needs, fostering a positive and inclusive classroom environment.

  • Assess and report on student progress, providing constructive feedback.

  • Engage with students, staff, and parents to foster strong relationships.

  • Integrate technology effectively into teaching and learning.

  • Participate in co-curricular programs and College events as required.

Head of Enterprise Studies (PAR):

  • Lead the strategic direction of Enterprise Studies, ensuring teaching and learning aligns with College vision, pedagogical frameworks, and curriculum priorities.

  • Drive high-quality curriculum planning, including Band Plans, Unit Plans, and Assessment Plans, ensuring compliance with QCAA and Australian Curriculum requirements.

  • Champion innovative, future‑focused teaching practices, including effective ICT integration and interdisciplinary learning opportunities.

  • Foster a collaborative, high-performing departmental culture through coaching, mentoring, and regular strengths-based feedback to teaching staff.

  • Contribute actively to the Learning Leadership Team, influencing whole‑school pedagogical direction and cross-departmental collaboration.

  • Oversee assessment design, moderation, and quality assurance processes, ensuring rigorous standards and timely submissions.

  • Manage departmental resources and budgets strategically, ensuring effective use of digital and physical learning tools.

  • Support staff wellbeing, professional growth, and any induction of early-career and pre-service teachers.

  • Represent the department in curriculum networks and collaborate with College leadership on strategic initiatives and continuous improvement.

  • Strong classroom management, communication, and organisational skills, modelling exemplary instructional practice for staff.

  • Experience managing departmental operations, including budgets, resource allocation, digital platforms, and contributions to whole‑school strategic initiatives.

Condensed Head of Department Position Description:

The Head of Department is a key academic leader responsible for driving excellence in teaching, learning, and curriculum development across Years 7 to 12. This role provides strategic direction aligned with the College’s vision, fosters a collaborative and innovative departmental culture, and ensures high standards of student achievement and staff performance. 

Heads of Department oversee curriculum planning, assessment, resource management, and professional development, while contributing to whole-school initiatives and ensuring compliance with relevant educational standards and policies. The role embraces both transformational and transactional leadership, balancing strategic influence with operational accountability. 

As middle leaders within the Secondary School, their core areas of responsibility include: 

  • Strategic Leadership in Pedagogy and Curriculum 

  • Staff Management 

  • Learning Outcomes and Environment 

  • Curriculum Leadership 

  • Resource Leadership 

Strategic Leadership in Pedagogy and Curriculum 

Heads of Department lead the strategic direction of teaching and learning within their subject areas, ensuring alignment with the College’s vision and priorities. They are expected to: 

  • Champion the College Strategic Plan

  • Lead the development and implementation of long-term planning processes

  • Facilitate the collaborative formulation of departmental goals

  • Actively contribute to the Learning Leadership Team (LLT)

  • Drive the integration of ICT into teaching and learning programs

Staff Leadership 

Heads of Department are responsible for fostering a positive, professional, and growth-oriented culture within their teams. In collaboration with the Head of Teaching and Learning – Secondary, they are expected to: 

  • Encourage open communication and collaboration within the department, promoting a culture of trust, respect, and shared responsibility. 

  • Provide regular informal feedback and support to staff, celebrating strengths and identifying areas for growth. 

  • Support staff in addressing performance or behavioural concerns and escalate complex or ongoing issues to the Head of Teaching and Learning – Secondary as appropriate. 

  • Conduct classroom walkthroughs or observations to provide constructive, strengths-based feedback and identify professional learning needs. 

  • Promote engagement in professional learning, including sharing relevant readings, resources, and opportunities aligned with College priorities. 

  • Support the wellbeing and morale of staff, including regular check-ins and fostering a sense of belonging and purpose. 

  • Assist with the induction and mentoring of new and pre-service teachers, ensuring they are welcomed and supported in their development. 

  • Encourage cross-departmental collaboration and participation in College-wide initiatives and Communities of Practice. 

  • Monitor relevant student and staff data to inform departmental planning and support, sharing insights with the Head of Teaching and Learning – Secondary as needed. 

  • Model professional conduct and uphold College policies, seeking guidance when unsure or when challenges arise. 

Learning Outcomes and Environment 

Heads of Department are instructional leaders who model excellence in teaching and learning. They are expected to: 

  • Lead by example through high-impact classroom practice and foster a responsive and inclusive learning environment

  • Mentor and coach teachers in collaboration with the Head of Teaching and Learning – Secondary

  • Cultivate a growth mindset across the department and champion the development of early-career and pre-service teachers

Curriculum Leadership 

Heads of Department provide strategic leadership in curriculum design, delivery, and innovation. They are responsible for ensuring that teaching and learning programs are rigorous, future-focused, and aligned with College and system-wide priorities. They are expected to: 

  • Lead collaborative curriculum planning that aligns with the College’s strategic direction and meets QCAA and Australian Curriculum requirements. 

  • Oversee the development, moderation, and timely submission of Band Plans, Unit Plans, and Assessment Plans using TASS and the QCAA Planning App. 

  • Ensure quality assurance in assessment design, moderation, and documentation, including QCAA endorsement and confirmation processes. 

  • Drive innovation in curriculum and pedagogy to engage diverse learners and promote deep learning. 

  • Promote interdisciplinary learning and the integration of ICT across teaching programs. 

  • Lead departmental contributions to whole-school curriculum initiatives, strategic reviews, and Communities of Practice. 

  • Evaluate and allocate curriculum resources effectively, ensuring alignment with learning goals and budgetary parameters. 

  • Oversee extension and co-curricular programs, including risk management for excursions, incursions, and camps. 

  • Maintain accurate and current student records and assessment data to inform planning, reporting, and continuous improvement. 

  • Continuously review assessment plans and schedules to identify opportunities for refinement and alignment with best practice. 

Resource Leadership

Heads of Department are stewards of departmental resources, ensuring their effective use to support high quality teaching and learning. They are expected to: 

  • Strategically manage departmental budgets

  • Investigate, evaluate and implement new programs, practices, and technologies and oversee the selection and maintenance of physical and digital resources

  • Ensure departmental compliance with WHS legislation and College policies, including academic integrity. 

  • Address broader College issues as they relate to departmental operations, ensuring alignment with strategic and operational frameworks. 

  • Foster a culture of resource sharing and collaboration within and beyond the department. 

Extent of Authority 

Heads of Department operate with delegated authority to lead their teams and manage departmental operations. They are expected to: 

  • Exercise budgetary discretion within approved parameters. 

  • Represent the department in external curriculum networks and liaise with QCAA as required. 

  • Collaborate with College leadership on strategic initiatives and policy implementation. 

  • Uphold the College’s values and act as a role model for professional conduct. 

  • Media communications must be authorised by College leadership; Heads of Department are not permitted to issue or release public statements on behalf of the College.
