Student Pathways Advisor
The Student Pathways Advisor is responsible for:
- Ensuring that directions, developments and activities in careers, vocational education and training (VET), on and off campus academic opportunities are available to St Andrews students.
- Providing career information and vocational advice to students and participate in careers for students and parents.
- Developing and coordinating the College career education program (DESTINATIONS) and working with students to explore career options, develop a career plan, and make proactive career decisions that are based on their abilities, interests, work values, personality and external influences.
- Administering, managing and monitoring students who leave our campus to participate in External Programs that provide students with a Nationally Recognised Qualification and a QCAA approved course. These include School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships and External Courses (e.g. TAFE Gold Coast and the Gold Coast Trades College).
- Managing and supervising students following courses of study with the Schools of Distance Education.
Key Functions, Accountabilities, Responsibilities and Deliverables:
Leadership and management for students
Develop and implement career education programs that provide learning experiences to assist students in making informed decisions about their study, training and/or work options/pathways of learning.
- Tailor career education programs to meet the specific needs of students appropriate for their year level. Source and coordinate external facilitators or programs or facilitators that can enhance existing College careers programs and further develop student attitudes and knowledge and support proactive decision-making processes Provide students (and their families) across all years 9 -12 with opportunities to receive individual careers counselling and access to careers resources.
- In consultation with the Deputy Principal and other key personnel (e.g. Head of Curriculum - Secondary, Head of Senior Years – Pastoral, Head of Inclusive Practices, Year Level Coordinators, Connect Teachers) assist students in the development and review of Career Plans (SET Plans), selection of appropriate subjects and decisions on course pathways.
- Coordinate Pathways interviews with students and families (particularly Year 10 students in relation to SET Plans).
- Lead or arrange professional development for staff conducting SET Plan interviews.
- Coordinate Pathways interviews with students and families (particularly Year 10 students in relation to SET Plans).
- Lead or arrange professional development for staff conducting SET Plan interviews.
- Provide students with regular, current and informative communications about upcoming careers events, programs and resources.
- Organise and coordinate events, excursions, visits from external agencies or other programs as appropriate that can further develop student knowledge and awareness of career opportunities. E.g. Year 10 and Year 11 attendance at the annual Gold Careers Festival.
- Assist and support students with interview technique and applications for courses, scholarship applications and related programs (e.g. Scholar’s Program at SCU, Headstart at Griffith University, Bond University SFAS, Start QUT, UQ Enhanced Studies) etc.
- Keep up to date with relevant information for tertiary course selection and other student pathways. E.g. Assist students and parents with enquiries about subject choices and changes.
- Assist students and staff in understanding how to manage the process of tertiary admission though the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC), interstate or international tertiary admission authorities.
- Assist Year 12 students with QTAC and QTAC EAS applications.
- Support students in their access to career information from tertiary institutions in Queensland, interstate and overseas.
- Encourage and inform students regarding university scholarships and bursaries.
- Organise and manage annual Careers Expo and University Showcase held at the school/College for students, involving various organisations, including tertiary institutions and professional associations.
- Publicise university open days, experience days and Careers Expos to students.
- Conduct Year 12 interviews throughout the year.
- Liaise with students and parents on a one-to-one basis to ensure the best possible pathways and destinations for St Andrews students and graduates.
- Collecting and evaluating data on student pathways, individual and group, within and outside the College.
- Together with the Head of Curriculum - Secondary, monitor academic performance of students (e.g. tracking student progression via the QCAA SMS, tracing/predicting points/scores towards the QCE and, as appropriate, ATAR) and the development and implementation of processes and strategies for communicating this to parents with alert processes for underachieving students.
- Coordinate, manage and administer Industry Experience for students in Year 10, 11 and 12.
Leadership of Staff
- Keep informed of best practice in Careers through on-going professional reading and research, and regularly providing for the professional learning of staff in line with these developments.
- Engage in professional discourse with staff on an individual and group basis through regular feedback in appropriate forums or formats.
- Coordinate and assist the work of teaching staff engaged in delivering careers education programs.
- Keep staff and students informed of the requirements and/or changes to tertiary entrance requirements and ATAR expectations.
- When appropriate, advise teachers of professional development for student course selection processes and tertiary entrance requirement.
- Work collaboratively and supportively with staff and members of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and specifically the Deputy Principal Head of Senior School and Year Level Coordinators to align careers programs, advice and events within a structure that supports the academic care of all students.
- Attend Learning Leadership Team (LLT) Meetings, Student Welfare Action Team (SWAT) and, as appropriate, Pastoral Team Meetings.
General
- Comply with all requirements of the Lutheran Education Queensland Child Safety Policy and Procedures.
- Adopt a growth mindset to pedagogical development, professional learning and College extra-curricular activities.
- All staff recognise and accept that multi-skilling is an essential component of St Andrews College life and may be required to undertake duties that are outside the position description but within the employee’s skills, competency and capability level.
- Maintain a portion of a classroom teaching load.
- Other appropriate responsibilities as required by the Principal.
- This role may require the Student Pathways Advisor to be available at times for meetings, College presentations and functions beyond the ordinary hours of the school day.
Technical/Professional Qualifications
- Must have a current Queensland College of Teacher registration (or be eligible for registration).
- Relevant Tertiary Qualifications.
Personal Skills Abilities and Aptitude
- Knowledge of the Australian Curriculum.
- Knowledge of the QCAA syllabus requirements for Year 11 and 12.
- Knowledge of the QCAA requirements in terms of QCE.
- Knowledge of VET courses, school-based traineeships.
- Knowledge of career pathway prerequisites and avenues.
- Demonstrated high level organisational ability.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive, effective working relationship with students, staff, parents and the other community members.
- Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral communication for a range of specific purposes and audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate resources, set priorities and achieve outcomes.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Information and Communication Technologies in pedagogical practice.
- Demonstrated active contribution to extra-curricular programs.
- Must satisfy all visa requirements for working in Australia.
