I went to the beach early one morning. The sun was rising over the Pacific. People were walking dogs along the beach, while early morning joggers streamed behind me. Even though I had encountered a few dozen people on my walk down to the beach, none had stopped to greet me. I suppose this was normal. Welcoming requires some effort, and to stop and talk to someone means precious time is used – wasted, some would say - by not focusing on myself and my needs.
After assembling my fishing gear, I hooked the bait and tossed the line out as far as I could, deep into the gutter. Perhaps twenty-five or thirty metres out, the sinker took the bait to the bottom leaving me to wait and ponder what might happen during the day.
More and more people arrived at the beach. Behind me, some Yoga-practitioners stretched and meditated in the sun. The coffee-walkers (as I call them) spoke loudly over the roar of the surf, speaking of things that didn’t really matter: the weather, the football, what kind of neighbourhood they’d like to live in.
None stopped to talk – it was not as if I need them to, yet I was fascinated by a place that seemed so joyous, but almost completely devoid of depth, and welcome.
In front of me, my line stayed loose, so I watched the surfers swish this way and that in the crashing waves. One particular fellow, a grinning, long-haired man with scraggly beard and bushy eyebrows, fell into the water right next to my line. This irritated me. Couldn’t he see that I was fishing? Was he unaware that this section of the beach belonged to me at the moment?
To be honest, my first reaction was not to welcome him into my area. He’d intruded on my space and my morning. I was wrapped up in my own little world and I didn’t need anyone else…
While that thought played in my mind, the surfer emerged from the water directly beneath my line, and with an interrupting stride towards me, this stranger extended a hand. Ignoring my silent protest, he said, ‘Welcome to the beach, brother. It’s great to have you here. Welcome!’
Taken aback, I shook his hand, and for the next moments, the surfer made me feel as if I was the most important person in the world. And after he turned from me, his lanky hair clinging to his wetsuit, I felt uplifted and joyful.
That’s what a welcome does.
Welcome back to Term Four! As we emerge from two weeks of holidays, hopefully golden memories have been made, I want to personally welcome you back to St Andrews, and I want you to feel as if you are the most important person in the world. In God’s eyes, you are – all of you! And from the College’s perspective, you are! Staff, parents, students, families – you are beautifully and wonderfully made for connection. A good ol’ welcoming at the beginning of the term will hopefully jumpstart a fantastic last nine weeks where we can celebrate all the golden goodness of 2022.
God bless you all!

CELEBRATING INNOVATIVE THINKING
This afternoon the pitch event for the IC’22 Entrepreneurial studies program was held. In its sixth year, the program includes students across Years 7-12 and the participants continue to grow in confidence and real-life business acumen. Many of the students who have taken part in previous years have gone on to prototype and launch their business ideas.
I would like to acknowledge Mrs Terri Myles who oversees this program with the support of a range of external business mentors. I’d also like to thank Mr Baden U’Ren who helped us establish the program, continues to offer his support to our entrepreneurs and was the Master of Ceremony for the event. Mr Derek Bartels, Director of Innovation and Learning for Lutheran Education Queensland was also part of our judging panel and his involvement is an absolute blessing. Further details pertaining to this outstanding initiative and event can be read within the IC’22 article, included in this newsletter edition.
POWERFUL AND ENGAGING LEARNING
I’ve been truly inspired by the learning I’ve come across in and out of normal classes these past few weeks. From watching our young people perform at the Cultural Celebration Awards, to seeing the Year 11 Art students engage with an Artist In Residence workshop, and a bunch of senior students together with Mrs Ngaire Harman, painting a mural at the back of the Centre for Creative Industries building.
In the Language department, our German language students from Years 9-12 attended an Oktoberfest for Teens excursion to embrace German fun, food, competitions, entertainment and, most importantly, language. While the Year 9-11 Japanese language students headed to Brisbane City to experience Japanese culture, shopping, food and the Mt Coot-tha Japanese botanical gardens.
In English, 15 of our Year 8 students gathered in the Library on Tuesday morning, for a special reading of their recently published works. It was a joy to hear their stories, have breakfast with them and their parents and celebrate their anthology of stories. Many thanks to Mrs Barbara Kristo for organising the event.
In Week One, the Senior School benefited from a very special guest speaker, local indigenous woman, Brenda Matthews. Brenda shared her heartfelt personal life journey of being taken from her beautiful families as a child. Her story is one of hurt, healing and building a bright future together as a nation. Brenda’s incredible story has also been made into a film called ‘The Last Daughter’ and will be released in cinemas in February 2023.
Next Friday, we welcome our Year 7, 2023 cohort for a ‘Slice of Seven’, a transition day in preparation for their Secondary School start in late January.
As part of our Service-Learning program, selected Year 9 students visited the Currumbin Community Special School to connect and engage with the students in that community. This is always such a rich positive experience for all involved.
World Staff Day is also next Friday. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all staff for their care, dedication, and commitment towards ensuring the best possible learning environment for our students to enjoy. Students will write lovely affirmations and thank you notes to their teachers and other members of College staff and these will be received with great appreciation.
From the teachers working with students in classrooms to our grounds and administrative staff, each member of our St Andrews team continues to work diligently towards making this a great community. For that, we are so grateful!

YEARS 4-12 SPORTS AWARDS
On Wednesday afternoon, a record number of students were acknowledged for Sporting excellence at the Annual Sports Awards. It is simply inspiring to see so many of our young sports men and women excelling in their chosen fields. Thank you to Mr Freddie Wood, Miss Casey West, Mrs Leanne Pett and Mrs Alesha Lyons who, along with an absolute tribe of dedicated coaches, continue to go above and beyond for our young athletes. This celebration was a reflection of their widespread commitment to developing Sport at St Andrews.
YEAR 12 FINAL SCHOOL DAYS…
My thoughts and prayers are with our Year 12 students as they have now finished their classes and enter three weeks of external exams. We look forward to celebrating with them on Wednesday 16 November for their Valedictory Evening, Thursday 17 November for the Senior School Awards and Celebration Evening, and Friday 18 November for their final chapel and guard of honour. Families and friends are most welcome to attend these events.

Head of Senior School
Term Four is certainly a busy term and students by the end of the year are quite tired. It is important to make sure your young person is getting enough sleep, exercising, eating properly, getting a good dose of Vitamin D and connecting with people face to face. It is also a time for parents to reflect with their children about their learning this year and work with them to make sure they have some good study habits at home. A home study timetable can help them achieve their goals. Senior School Connect Group teachers can help your child create a study planner if they seem to be disorganised and leaving study until the last minute. Staff at the College are only too happy to work with parents to help students improve their study habits.
We wish the Year 12 students the very best for their upcoming exams. They have worked hard on their assessments this year and they need to continue this momentum. Students should be doing at least three hours of study a day in preparation for these exams. A schedule of the final week events has gone out to our students and will be re-sent towards the end of the exam block. We look forward to sharing their final celebrations with them.
Year 11 students are also about to undertake some of their Year 12 assessment at the end of Term Four. Again, students should be doing at least two and a half to three hours of study per day. Even if homework is not set, students should be revising daily work and working on upcoming assessment. We congratulate the 2023 Student Leaders and look forward to all the Year 11 students leading the College from now and building their legacy.
Finally, Year 10 students should be carefully considering career pathways and thinking about their future pathways. Mrs Christina Wrigley will be back on board this week and will be able to speak to students about their future careers should they wish to do so.
If you have any pastoral or academic concerns about your child, don’t hesitate to reach out to their Connect Group teacher, Year Level Coordinator or myself.
From the Head of Middle School
The role of parents in children’s lives is one that has always had me assessing; are we there to smooth the path for them? or assist them in navigating the path if it becomes a little bumpy? Are we there to complete all tasks for them? Or give them the courage to ‘have a go’, fail and know that everything will be ok? Are we there to tell them that they are smart, beautiful, artistic or kind? Or is it our role to get them to the point that they believe this in themselves?
As my own daughter is nearing the end of Year 12 and then in 2023, heading off to University in another city, I ask myself “have we done enough to equip her for life beyond us?”. Another piece from Maggie Dent allowed me to print off a list. I do love a good list! I am not sure if my daughter will be as happy as I will be, checking to see what we have missed. Below is the link if you would like to start earlier than I have.
‘Mirror Mirror’ is a TV show currently airing on Channel 10. Todd Sampson has been investigating how the internet is affecting relationships and what impact it is having on our lives. I am attaching a fact sheet about Omegle. This website has been around for a while, however it might be a timely reminder for families to discuss the appropriate use of apps and internet sites.
As I head off on my long service leave, I wish all families the best for the end of 2022. Enjoy the Christmas and New Year period and I will see you all in January 2023. Please contact your child’s Connect Group teacher or Year Level Coordinator if you have any concerns. Mr Brendan Smith (brendans@salc.qld.edu.au) will be stepping into the Head of Middle School role while I am away and would also be happy to assist you and your children.

Language News
Middle and Senior German and Japanese students recently enjoyed a cultural day out in Brisbane.
Our Year 9 Language Ambassadors recount:
Last Thursday, the Japanese class joined the German students on an excursion to Brisbane. We spent the morning in the city, visiting Daiso and making purchases. We ate obento lunches from Oshin, a Japanese restaurant in the city, before visiting the Japanese Botanical Gardens just outside the city. The gardens were very beautiful and the day was a rewarding experience.
Tobias B
The Oktoberfest experience was a great outing! Inside the main tent was a large centre stage where students could compete in games, as well as sing and dance to the Oompa band that played songs such as Rock Mi, Fliegerlied “Flying Song” , Chicken Dance and 99 Luftballons. There were cool rides and even a petting zoo. There were also plenty of food choices, including German sausages, Apple Strudel and Giant Pretzels! We received a traditional Gingerbread heart upon exit, as a souvenir to remember the day.

MEDIEVAL ARTIFACT MUSEUM
In the final week of Term Three, the Library transformed into a museum showcasing the incredible creative efforts of the Year 8 Humanities students. Medieval artifacts created by the Year 8 cohort were on display. This was a fantastic experience not only for the humanities students but for the whole of Secondary School, who were able to visit the museum during school hours and marvel at the curiosities of Medieval life.

Complete with wrapping paper and fanfare, she hand-delivered each Year 12 English class a set of Oxford Study Buddy books to assist with their external exams. The Library Services Team wish our Year 12 students the very best as they head into their final weeks of study.
YEAR 8 ANTHOLOGY EVENT
The Secondary Library and Year 8 English teachers have celebrated the launch of the Year 8 Anthology of Short Stories, titled Short Circuit. Each author was provided the opportunity to read a passage from their story and answer questions in front of their parents, families, and teachers in a special book launch event.
Short Circuit is an anthology of selected student work inspired by a workshop students took part in earlier this year with Australian author Brian Falkner. We are incredibly proud of the authors for their creative and unique stories. Short Circuit will be available to borrow from the Library later this week.

One of my favourite mornings in the calendar is the Prep to Year 12 Journey Breakfast. The breakfast is dedicated to students and their families who have completed their entire schooling journey at St Andrews. This year over two thirds of the students who started in Prep in 2010 are set to graduate in a couple of weeks’ time.
This year’s Year 6 students will be our first ELC students to have gone all the way through from Pre-Prep to Year 6. It has been wonderful to look back through the photos of the Year 6 students when they were in the ELC and to see their growth as a person and as a student.
As teachers and educators, it is a great privilege and honour to work closely with your children and to have a significant impact on their education. Over the next few weeks we will take the time to honour and celebrate the journeys of our students. As we do, I encourage all of us to take a moment to give thanks for the many opportunities and gifts that have been afforded to all of us.
Enjoy the journey …….

Early Learning Centre
From the Director of the ELC
Term Four kicked off with a bang! With so many events and key learning experiences occurring all the time, it’s hard to keep up.
The ELC Staff have been working hard the past two months on our critical reflection and documentation. Miss Teresa, our Educational Leader, has been working with the team to dig deeper into the what, why and how of our planning and programming. The team have been unpacking what we do, why we do it and how we can improve. Documentation and program planning is ever evolving, and we value parents input into the program and feedback on the daily program which is shared via Xplor and the term program which is displayed in the rooms.
STAFFING CHANGES
Miss Mardi will finish with us on Friday, 21 October. We will certainly miss Mardi and wish her all the very best with her new adventures. Mardi was at the ELC right from the day the doors were opened for the very first time and we thank her for her service and commitment. We are currently working on finding a new educator to join our team. In the meantime, the room will operate with three educators as all children are now over the age of three years old. Staffing for 2023 will be announced before the end of the year.
2023 OFFERS
Offers for 2023 have commenced and I will continue to work on these offers until the end of the year.

The end of year closure is from Friday 16 December. The centre will re-open on Wednesday 4 January. All children heading to Prep will finish at the ELC on 16 December or prior if you have advised. Please remember that two weeks’ notice is required for your bond payments to be refunded to your Xplor account.
CHILD CARE SUBSIDY (CCS)
Please ensure that you closely monitor your accounts and look for changes to your Child Care Subsidy. Recently we have had several family’s circumstances change and this impacted on their accounts. Your statements can be found in your Xplor account. If you are the primary parent and are having trouble finding your account statement or financial details, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me for help.
PROGRAM COMPASSION
We are seeking donations for children who are at risk and have been removed from their homes. Often in these circumstances, the children have no personal items with them. We are specifically looking for donations of brand-new clothing (any size), stationery and toiletries. We are hoping to put together five packs. All donations are due in early November.
OUR CURRENT ELC PRAYER
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for all that you have given us, for our friends, our teachers and all our toys. We ask that you wrap your hands around our families and little children that are sick and in hospital. Please support the doctors and nurses in helping to care for them.
In God’s hands we play each day.
Amen.
Junior Kindy News
We have had yet another busy month in Junior Kindy. During the school holidays, we ventured down to play at the large sand pit and the monkey bars. All the children tried really hard to manage the monkey bars! Some of the children came to the realization that they are just not quite tall enough yet. This play experience also gave the children an opportunity to play with their older siblings.
This month the children engaged in learning about space. They spent time making collage planets, and a huge rocket. We extended on this learning with a visit from Indigenous Elder, Uncle Allan, who explained to the children that the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people pay careful attention to the motions of the solar system.
Each of the children had a turn at creating a painting of the planets which is now displayed in our room. A visit to the library to collect a book about the planets further built on their learning of space.

The children have explored a few different art experiences including marble painting, collage and easel painting. They have also continued to build on their fine motor skills with many different activities like cutting shapes with scissors and threading activities.
Over the course of this term, we will be focusing on transitioning the children to the Pre Prep rooms. We have started to talk with the children about what is the same or different about Pre Prep, including routines and transitions. This assists us to develop strategies to help build their emotional resilience.
We have also begun further building on the children’s self-help skills and they are now making their own beds before rest time. The staff have all been amazed at how quickly the children have managed to complete this task as well as how the children help one another, it is super cute.
The children are also still very engaged in the outdoor environment, with lots of climbing on the different obstacle courses. The course has different height levels to challenge all the different needs of the children.
The Junior Kindy team.
Pre Prep 1 News
What an adventurous month we have had as the children began to explore the Junior School learning environments. They have been interacting with new teachers, visiting new rooms, and experiencing the Prep playground, sandpit and oval. The children are becoming very familiar with these areas and are learning all about how to care for them as well. This began our unit of Inquiry ‘Learning environments are organised to help us play and learn together’.
While visiting the Japanese room in the Junior School, the students had the opportunity to perform their Japanese dances. This developed their confidence in performing in front of new people (including some of their siblings). We then moved throughout the Junior School in our traditional Japanese outfits. Sensai Sharon was very proud of our classroom interactions and how we performed in the new learning environment.

Indigenous Elder, Uncle Allan, came to visit during our morning activities. For this visit, he brought along a collection of paints. The students placed their chosen canvas on the table and discussed with Uncle Allan what they would like to display on our classroom painting. The students painted the St Andrews ELC as the meeting place of Tallebudgera Creek connecting with Jellurgal. They then added animal tracks to represent all our wildlife. This experience promoted an awareness for their surroundings and the children’s ideas of how we connect with our community.
We look forward to the end of our year filed with many amazing learning opportunities.
REMINDERS
Please dress your children in their St Andrews ELC uniform shirt as we will be having many interactions down at the Junior School until the end of the term

Pre Prep 2 News
Welcome to Term Four! This year is going super-fast, and we are already preparing and practicing for our end of year celebration. This term we commenced our new unit of inquiry ‘How we organise ourselves’. We have been talking about the role of our learning environments and their purpose. This coincides with the transition to the new learning environments in the Junior School or for some, another year in the ELC. Our aim is to tailor the transition process to meet needs of each individual child and ensure that the transtition is as calm and as smooth as possible. With this in mind, over the course of the term we will look at some of the following:
Routines and the role of learning environemnts (both at Junior School and ELC)
Visits to the Junior School (Library, Japanese room, STEAM room, oval, Tuckshop, Worship Centre and the Multipurpose Hall)
Looking at aerial views of schools around the world and how they are different
House colours
What do we need to know before going to prep
Rules and expectations
Writing letters to the prep teachers and Mr Schumacher
We will also be focusing on the children’s social emotional and self help skills such as packing bags, opening containers and toileting idependently. We have begun visiting some of the leanring spaces within the school over the past few weeks and have been truly blessed with how welcoming and accommodating the teachers have been within the community.

This month we connected with our local Indigenous Elder, Uncle Allan, who visited the ELC to demonstrate how to create story lines which are like dreamtime stories. The children created their own story of Gowandi from Tallebudgera Creek by using a range of paints and wooden sticks.
Over the past month, Miss Rachel has been completing her university placement and is leanirng to beocme a teacher. We have loved having her in Pre Prep 2 and wish her every success in her future studies.
Remember that change is difficult for anyone, so it is important to talk to your children about the changes that they will see next year. Add small responsibilities to their daily routine such as packing their bag, getting dressed or carrying their bag into the ELC to develop independence and responsibility.

CARE KITS FOR KIDS QLD DONATION DRIVE
Hello families! Just a quick note from OSHC to let you know we are running a donation drive from now until 17 November to collect items for the Care Kits for QLD drive. These Care Kits are to support children who are unexpectedly placed into out of home care. These children often leave their homes with just the clothes on their back, so being able to provide a kit of essential items would make just a small, but significant difference to these children.
Items being collected include:
Backpacks
Toiletries
